Fitness and wellbeing have seen their fair share of trends over the years. After the aerobics craze of the 80’s, the spinning and kickboxing phases of the 90’s and the yoga obsession of the 00’s, the biggest topic of the 2010’s appears to be weightlifting. While weight training has been popular for decades, companies like Crossfit have given it a boost in the past few years. The existence of websites and apps such as Youtube and Instagram have allowed weight training to reach a much wider audience than ever before, and have reached a demographic which used to be a clear minority within the sport; women. The desire of achieving the thinnest bodies possible has given room to an effort to be strong. “Strong is the new skinny” has become the new slogan for many exercise enthusiasts, even though the trend has not been spared of critics. Some admire the message the slogan sends to young girls, while others argue that it is merely another gimmick to promote unhealthy body images and eating habits.

So I take my good fortune
And I fantasize about our leaving
like some modern-day gypsy landslide
like some modern-day Bonnie and Clyde
on the run again
on the run again.
